One of the quiet advantages of living in the Treasure Valley is how much genuinely different country sits within a tank of gas. Drive ninety minutes north and you are in ponderosa forest and alpine lakes; ninety minutes south and you are in high desert canyon country that looks like another planet. Roughly speaking there are four directions. North up Highway 55 toward Cascade, Donnelly, and McCall gets you lakes, the Payette River, and most of the region’s developed hot springs. Northeast on Highway 21 through Idaho City climbs the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway toward Lowman and, eventually, Stanley and the Sawtooths. South and southwest into the Owyhees and along the Snake River gives you Jump Creek, Celebration Park, Bruneau Dunes, and Silver City. Southeast down I-84 reaches Thousand Springs, Hagerman, and — on a long day — City of Rocks.
